The Mockingbirds’ Moonlight Song A little story about listening and finding your voice
In the jasmine bush beside a little blue house, Mama and Papa Mockingbird had a nest full of wiggles. There was Wren. There was Dot. And there was Pip. 1
Wren could whistle like the garden gate. Dot could chirp like the cricket under the steps. Pip opened his beak. “Peep,” he said. Then he tucked his head beneath his wing. 2
“You don’t have to hurry,” Mama told him. Papa tilted his head. “Every good song begins with listening.” So Pip listened. 3
He heard rain tapping a leaf. He heard bees humming over clover. He heard a little tree frog call, “Prrrup! Prrrup!” Pip liked that sound best. 4
That evening, the wind shook the garden. A tiny voice rose from behind the flowerpot. “Prrrup?” The little frog had lost his way. “My pond is somewhere in the dark,” he said. 5
Wren tried the garden-gate whistle. Dot tried the cricket chirp. The frog only blinked. Pip took a breath. “Prrrup! Prrrup!” The garden grew quiet. 6
From beyond the fence came an answer. “Prrrup! Prrrup!” “That’s my family!” cried the frog. Mama and Papa flew ahead. Pip and his siblings followed from branch to branch. The frog hopped below. 7
At the pond, the frogs sang their welcome. Back in the jasmine bush, Pip added his small voice to his family’s song. Whistle. Chirp. Prrrup. Peep. Under the moon, there was room for every sound. 8
